It may have been true for him--I don't think it's true for everyone. I've never been comfortable around other people, and I never emulated anyone on TV.
Some people are just destined to be loners. I'm pretty sure my genetics make it fairly impossible for me to sustain comfortable social interactions for more than the minimal time necessary. I know that I make people uncomfortable just by the mere fact of my presence, and that also makes me uncomfortable - but it's not sure which is the chicken and which is the egg? In my younger days I have tested the social circles of nerds and freaks, hoping that I might find something of an identity in one of these groups. The final verdict was that I was an outcast among outcasts. And then I realized that the self-proclaimed outcasts weren't really outcasts after all - they had some shared outward peculiarity to them.
Despite lacking any outward peculiarities to explain my station in life, I was neither able to fit into "normal" society nor the "fringe" of society. I found that I really disliked many of the "peculiar" people, as they took certain pride in their eccentricities in a way that was kind of elitist and grotesque. In much of the same way that "normal" people took strange pride in the fact that they fit together like so many neat puzzle pieces.
Fast forward to today. Being a loner does not affect me negatively or positively - it just is.
Reminded me of my days as a bartender. It always amazed how complete strangers would share with me some of the most intimate details of their life.
I guess they had to tell someone. Someone they didn't know.
