To the OP, I hate to tell you this, but sex is pretty much the only thing you can do on a date these days. Sucks, sure .. but yep, the only way you can get to know someone in 2010 is to have sex.
Do you plan on dating Paris Hilton? Or someone similar?
If not, you're probably safe to go out to dinner or take some other suggestions given here. Seriously, take a look at who you are attracted to. Everyone your age is not the same.

It's known that the majority of people have s*x on the first date in the promiscuous USA.
What can a couple do on dates, like what can they do for fun that doesn't involve sex or going to nightclubs? I haven't dated in years.
I dont know where you get this "majority of people have sex on the first date" stuff from, Id like to see you post your sources on this because I think that is total malarky.
But anyways, there are lots you can do:
Go to a concert
Go to a museum (Getty, LACMA, MOCA, etc.)
Hiking to the beach
Bowling
Indoor rock climbing
Gun range
Take a yoga class
Dinner on 3rd Street then walk on Santa Monica Pier
Carousel Restaurant Glendale for the BEST middle eastern food and dancing
Dinner, Movie and coffee at the Grove or Universal Citiwalk
You are in LA there are millions of things to do.
Most importantly, you need to find out what you and the chick are interested in. If she's a Tea Party type chick then she'll probably not be interested in any museums or philharmonic concert. Find out what you both will enjoy then do THAT.
I haven't been on a real date in a LONG time, not since my teens.
I know that I do NOT want to go to the movies or out to a fancy pancy dinner.
I would like to do something active and DIFFRENT. Hike or kayak down a slow moving river with a healthy lunch. Something where I don't feel a lot of pressure to conform into something I am reall not into
