If we want to split hairs, I'm not sure any race is technically it's own race.
The expression of a race came from an earlier notion of evolution that human groups evolved independently of one another. Dwarves and elves are races, blacks and whites aren't.

It became tradition and the explanation expanded to meet the truth as we knew it. Sort of like Native Americans are now Indians. They are not and never have been Indians, But a dictionary will express a definition of Indian that includes Native Americans. We kind of adjust the word to meet the truth. we're really just one big dysfunctional family
