My feeling is, if you're on a dating site that requires a fee for full use, then pay the fee (after any free trial period to evaluate if the site's style works for you), and ignore anyone who has not also paid to be there. If you don't want to pay, use one of the totally free sites so it doesn't matter.

I've used free and pay sites, and had the best results from the pay sites (I liked match.com, but did not like eHarmony, and thought most other pay sites were of questionable quality).
