"My friend who lives her [sic] told me this has been going on for awhile, they’ve been fighting like that for months"
I have an ex-boyfriend who yelled at me and called me a "B". That was the first and last time he ever did that - I dumped him within a day or so. Looking back, I should have dumped him within a minute or two.

Well, didn't you see the caption under his picture...?
Cuffed: Raul Barrera allegedly confessed to hacking and nearly decapitating girlfriend Sarah Coit to death after she tried to dump him.
If he'd been violent before, she should have had back up for the break up; preferably a couple of male friends with guns.
Yeah, sounds good, but not everybody has a support system. Besides, such men are revengeful. If he can't kill her at the time of leaving, he'll find a way to kill her later. I believe there's nothing you can do once you get involved with somebody like this in some cases.
Leaving/dumping is the most dangerous time for a woman in an abusive relationship - the most likely time for her to be murdered.
I think the op means that the first sign someone shows you they don't respect you (by calling you a name, etc) would be the best time to exit the situation...something you might catch on to before either of you are invested.

I understand that, but I don't believe it will help in all cases.
C'mon, it was the lower East side of NYC - that's open territory for nut-jobs!
I believe that if everyone left at the FIRST sign of trouble in their relationships, the divorce rate would hover around 98% and online dating would disappear. But since people aren't willing to work things out anymore (with of course the exception of abusive relationships), why not?
The lawyers will love it.
