Or is it just a waste of time? Both the husband and wife want the marriage to work and agree to counseling; however, neither is real confident that a third party can really help them work through their issues. I'd be interested to hear both sides - if it was beneficial or not.
It has been my experience both personally and with others I know that counseling rarely works out. Either the counselor hasn't the guts to really get through to the core issues or the couple hasn't the desire to really accept and face their problems.
I works if you work it. (Both have to work it) I think there may have been a thread about this already.
I am one who went to counseling hoping to get out of my marriage (5 years ago) Now I am very content and happy I stayed. Still have issues but have a ton more tools for dealing with them.
Counseling helped me in 3 main areas:
1) Communication
2) Taking responsibility for my part in a relationship issue.
3) Separating past relationship hurts, family issues etc. from whatever my spouse did that "triggered" those strong feelings.
