Is it true that people seek out partners whose personalities are different from theirs? Or do people look for potential mates who are more like themselves or maybe those family members they grew up with? It's said that some women look for a mate that resembles their father, and some men gravitate towards those similar to their mother. All of this is supposed to happen on a sub-conscious level.
The best partners are those that have a good mixture of both: similar on core values but opposite in strengths and weaknesses. Overall, someone who complements you.

It would really depend on what particular traits we're talking about. I've known couples in which one person was very outgoing and extraverted while their spouse was just the opposite. In fact that's exactly how my parents were. But if it was a situation in which one partner was a shopaholic and irresponsible financially and their spouse was frugal and watched the money closely it's inevitable that there's going to be problems.
I think that opposite attracts, but similar retains.
That's true, Chunk. Now all you need to do is become a stripper! May I book ya for my next birthday?
