I've always preferred small, neighborhood bars -- okay, dives. No, some are just more laid back, casual, lots of regulars. I met a really cool guy at one of those bars. (Sorry, Chessie, I couldn't stop myself. )
I think also because they attract the wrong kind of crowd. If you're looking for a booty-call, then the bar is for you. If you're looking for a mate, then look elsewhere (e.g. work, restaurant, park, etc.).
That being said, I'm not ruling out the possibility of finding someone at the bar who's decent, but most of the time they aren't.
IMO I think bars send out that kind of vibe when it may not be true. You can find a decent guy at the bar who is looking for a serious relationship and a guy who is looking for booty-call at work. It goes both way. I go to the bar once every two week to catch up with my cousin. Not looking for booty-call or anything.

Look if you can't tell an upscale bar/club from a dive by the time you are old enough to go one, then stay home!
I've been to many restaurants with bars and I can tell which ones are dives and which ones are good. Cheesecake Factory for example, has a great bar. Black Angus on the other hand, had a pretty trashy looking bar.

I LOVE the Cheesecake Factory! YUMMY! But you are right about it having a great bar.

Ok bad example. How about Luna? It's a Mexican restaurant and it's got a pretty decent looking bar. And some of the places in Vegas had nice looking bars too.
