I'm still trying to meet people out where I live. It's been over 9 months and I still don't have a steady group of friends.

I've tried all sorts of things, such as meetup. com. I'm sorry to say, but I just no longer have an interest to really attend such events. I find most of the people who attend aren't really compatible with me to hangout with. Or they are older than what I would consider myself to hang around with. At my last meetup, I said to myself...what am I doing here? I don't have anything in common with any of these people, we don't go to the same places, most of them head out to bars after the game anyway...what's the point?

So it pretty much leaves me with nightlife as the only real place for entertainment. But I mention I've met a lot of fake, phony types here...I get, "well that's what you get when you go to a bar". And I'm just like...well what about these people who are at these meetup.com events who go to bars? They are just as fake and phony too. They just act a bit more friendly during the meetup, but afterwards you realize there isn't much in common...so you just fake it.

So I'm just like, I don't know. Right now it's labor day weekend and my out of town plans were cancelled. I'm bored as **** with nothing to do. I just met a guy I like but I can't be around him every single night and he works weird hours. So what is a single person to do? I'm going out tonight...Like, what am I supposed to do?

bars and nightclubs only have a bad rep from people that dont have the personalities to fit in at those places....and the people that just like to sit at home on the internet on friday night and ***** about how their life sucks while doing nothing to make it better

anyways take up a hobby or sport you might like and meet some people.

SO not true I have social friends who don't sit at home all day and they still give clubs a bad rep...so that is not true, it just depends on the people who are at the club

Yeah, me too.

OP,

I don't know why they get a bad rap. There are a lot of nice bars/clubs. The kinds in which middle class folks frequent.

Not all are hole in the wall bars. I still go to them.

A lot goes into a club's rep, from quality of booze to staff friendliness to atmosphere to clientele to "incidents" ... it's a complex equation, but you can be sure that once a bar gets it's "atmosphere" it's pretty much set in stone until a major management / ownership change. So if you have a "rough" bar (biker fights, drug deals, etc.) it's hard to lose that "rep", even if they toss out the bikers and druggies and put Barney The Purple Dinosaur wallpaper in the men's room...

Perception is everything. With the way the usual bar social network works, if you **** off one customer you'll lose 10 from that one incident down the road. It's like wildfire.

Other possible reasons:
  • watered-down booze
  • high prices
  • long wait for service
  • inefficient / lack of security
  • nerd/geek population (unless it's a nerd/geek bar!)
  • mugging / attacks in parking lot / side streets
  • management allows / encourages "rough trade" customers
  • wrong music

Bars/Clubs getting a bad rep have nothing to do with not having the personality to fit in, it's more like they are nothing more than shooting galleries where things can be going good at first, then all of a sudden there's loud arguing which turns into a Pier 6 brawl, then shots ring out in the parking lot. This isn't just the hood clubs, even upscale nightlife areas attract ghetto thuggery who bring their street beef into an otherwise peaceful environment. That's why clubs/bars get a bad rep.

I think also because they attract the wrong kind of crowd. If you're looking for a booty-call, then the bar is for you. If you're looking for a mate, then look elsewhere (e.g. work, restaurant, park, etc.).

That being said, I'm not ruling out the possibility of finding someone at the bar who's decent, but most of the time they aren't.

Look if you can't tell an upscale bar/club from a dive by the time you are old enough to go one, then stay home!
