It’s a quiet little fact of senior residences across the country: Grandpa is living with someone else’s Grandma.
In their 70s, 80s and beyond, older couples meet in seniors-only housing and live together unencumbered by marriage vows. Their relationships are committed and bonded, meant to last the rest of their lives, sometimes even informally blessed by clergy.
According to U.S. census figures, co-habitation numbers for people 65 and older have tripled in the past decade, jumping from 193,000 in 2000 to 575,000 in 2010.

Oh, trust me, I know. I'm 40 and my husband is 44 and I can only imagine the "eeeews" my kids' friends would get if forced to entertain the idea of...never mind.

These are the same folks giving it the title "shaking up". They didn't believe in a lifestyle that began with the baby boomers and living together without a marriage license was sinful. Funny how economics changed their opinions.

I'm afraid I don't quite follow - wouldn't these folks be the original hippies? They're certainly in the proper age range ...
No. I'm a babyboomer, my mothers in her 80s and not a hippie.
Granted, 80 is a little past it - I was thinking along the lines of 60-70-year-olds ... the article mentioned "co-habitation numbers for people 65 and older".
We're on opposite ends of the elephant, I think - sorry for the confusion.

Wait..."seniors" are usually classified as 65 and up, right? Or sometimes 60 and up? That was definitely the Flower Power generation.
