You are at the table across from your date and you are smiling at him but not saying anything. I always get caught off caught when it happens and get a little uncomfortable so was just wondering what does it mean so I can react better next time?

Ummmmm ... waiting for him to say something?
Admiring him?
Remembering a joke I heard earlier?
Watching something funny on the TV behind him?

I guess the staring/smiling can be a tad bit uncomfortable.

It's an attempt to connect in a direct, non-verbal way. Sorry it makes you feel uncomfortable. Maybe you should explore that?

If she's smiling go with it. That's a good thing. It means she's working to show interest.

Maybe you need to ask more probing types of questions to encourage her and then give her time to speak.

Is it possible you're just talking too much without giving her the opportunity?

Smile back

Compliment her.

Ask her a question.

Gas pain.

Trying to keep herself from screaming at you and stomping out.

First few dates? She's nervous, not sure what to say, but wanting to show that she's happy to be there..You'll earn points by being able to create conversation in those moments.

Established relationship? She's having positive thoughts about you.

Enjoying a happy moment? Why are you trying to read minds, and interpret every little gesture, OP?

Ask her if she's enjoying herself. That would be the normal thing to do. Ask her if she's having a good time. That's what a smile usually means.
