I answered #1. I have nothing against guy in situation #2 at all, it's admirable that he's the best in his profession, but all else being completely equal, if I had to choose between two nearly identical men except those two traits, the man in situation #1 reminds me of men in my family and people I grew up with--it's the same reason in another thread I mentioned I have a preference towards blue collar men.
Plus, the reality is if Man #2 is the best in the world at his career--he most likely has a high end job and spends a lot of time with his career (the best usually do). Again, that makes him someone to look up to, but I don't know how well he'd be able to maintain a relationship. That makes him less appealing than the "regular Joe" kind of man (at least for me).
Definitely #1. They are becoming a rarity. My Dad is also a handyman and it is comforting to know that he can be depended on for a lot of practical things.
I actually kind of feel sorry for the guys who meet criteria #2. They are often incredibly gifted when it comes to the tech world and incredible brain power, but lack social skills. Many suffer from forms of Asperger's and lack social skills. I have no idea why this is, but it is very common.
As a guy if I had to choose between two skill sets, I'd choose #1. I'd love to be able to build stuff, make modifcations to my own home, etc. Computers I see as a necessary evil. They are nice to use, but knowing how they work doesn't interest me at all. I guess I'm going into the future kicking and screaming!
