If you feel so strongly about some racial/ethnic background that you don't want to identify yourself simply as "American", you should move back to the country of origin. I find it extremely laughable that 99% of "African Americans" have stronger ties to the North American continent than most other groups put together.
Yes but what about groups that have mainly been slaughtered out like Native Americans throughout the US, Canada and South America?
They have no place to go because they are where they belong and they don't want to be called American or Canadian or South American ect. because they are not part of that culture and it is those culture that killed most of their people hence the dislike and unwillingness to be associated with those peoples.
Im in the south, and we prefer ma'am or miss so I voted, depends on the context. I am not offended by "female" but wouldnt much care for it if someone were speaking to me directly. If someone is referring to me as a group or a descriptive term, no problem.
I feel referring to someone as male or female is disrespectful and ignorant, as the term describes you as less than an individual.
I guess I feel this way because of a man that would come by our house and sell fresh pork out of his truck (no joke). My ex always wanted us to buy some from him. I never like the guy, he seemed really misogynistic to me and always sent his wife to the door and to step and fetch. One day, his wife wasn’t with him and I happened to answer the door. The guy looked at me and said “Is the man home”. That’s all he would say to me. It ticked me off. I get maybe he didn’t want to do business with me, but why wouldn’t someone say, “is you husband home”, or “is the man of the house home”?

Which brings to mind a funny story, There is a local ex-politician/general rabble-rouser here who has a fierce reputation for being one of the most racist idiots one could ever come across. Continuously boasting his African heritage he routinely wears flowing dashikis and used to throw references to "the motherland" into his speeches. One story which was kept very quiet happened several years ago when he took a trip to Ghana. Never having visited Africa in his life but full of himself in his self-appointed role of some sort of a "returning son", he promptly (and much to the utter bewilderment of his hosts) started spewing out mindless rhetoric urging the locals to "rise up and take back your land!" Nobody had a clue what he was babbling about or why and he caused such a fuss that he was asked to leave the country early. Funny how he never mentions Africa any more although he still sweeps around in the dashikis.

If it bothers you that much, live on a reservation. Also, I don't see any slaughter going on right now, do you? All the Chinese and Irish who were treated like trash during the westward expansion don't seem to harbor any ill will.

Get over it.
The Chinese and the Irish weren't driven to near extinction.
Anywho it doesn't bother me personally but I know those who are offended by it. They prefer to be called by their tribe names and yes these are the same folks living on the reservations.
However I would like to reject the whole 'like it or get out' mentality when it comes to nationality and how you address someone because some people are native and have been forced out.

No, they were simply used as slave labor whose lives beyond doing menial work was inconsequential. What's your point? Indians got shafted? So what.

And again, some people are offended at anything. F them. I have more Native American blood than most people who actually live on reservations and identify themselves as being part of a particular tribe. I think it's a crock, completely motivated by money. Don't kid yourself, Indians get a ton of money from the government.

Reject it all you want, but you're full of crap. I have no idea what you mean by "native". Indians can live on reservations and do whatever they want. Mexicans can go back to Mexico. Eskimos can build igloos. Wtf are you talking about?

Multiculturalism is destroying this country.
If you think Indians get alot of money from the government please google Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. There are tribes who make a ton from gambling and casinos but those are a small population when compared to the rest of the Native American tribes.
Native means they were here first. We took this land from them. Yes it was terrible but my point is not about that stuff. My point is that it isn't fair to put the label that anyone who lives in America should just settle for being called an American or get out.
Multiculturalism helped form this country. It is the political correctness and lack of personal responsibility that is killing this nation.
