I know the obvious meaning that both people are not dating anyone else but does it also imply that both have agreed to be in a relationship? How does it differ from being in a relationship? Does "dating exclusively" automatically imply being girlfriend and boyfriend?

I'd think so, but I have learned to not make any assumptions so I would have this talk with the guy/girl to be 100% sure where we stand.

If I'm dating a guy, and we are dating only each other...then in my world that makes us boyfriend and girlfriend.

*edit*...actually, I agree more with LM below. I guess there probably is this time frame where you are dating exclusively, but not really in that "boyfriend/girlfriend" state of mind yet. But I think that period of time is very very short for most people.

Just my take..."dating exclusively" is the precursor to boyfriend/girlfriend. It means things are progressing in that direction.

I always thought the difference is that at the boyfriend/girlfriend level they are becoming involved in certain aspects of your life. For example, he/she might be involved in many of your circle-of-friend activities. They might be invited to family parties, bbqs, etc.

Dating exclusively, to me, is no different than regular dating other than you two have agreed to only date eachother. A stepping stone to bf/gf.

Just my thoughts.

@NJBest, I was also under that opinion.... it's the intermediate stage, more serious than just casually dating to see if it's a fit or not but rather going towards a relationship but it's still not at the relationship level yet.

I with DRGirl here. Make no assumptions! Talk about it to make it clear what it really means to the two of you

Dating exclusively is not necessarily a committed relationship yet. However, it is a precursor, in a way an agreement to try and be exclusive to see if you want to pursue a committed relationship.

I do not think it is a status that, by itself lasts long. If you are dating exclusively, and things are progressing, a committed relationship should blossom and the couple should be growing closer together and being more involved with each other.
