I have an advantage. I'm totally deaf without my hearing device on, Cochlear implant}. When faced with a situation like that I make it obvious that I reach up and turn it off. LOL. You are then just talking to yourself because I can't hear anything!!!!
You are advantaged in situations like that. But this person is rabidly insistent about getting attention like a starving hog is to scraps.

Yes. I've seen it. In social settings nobody has the guts to say anything about it: it would only end up in a circular fight which is what he likes to initiate. If the bosses at his job are this way then he will fit right in and get promoted. Let's see what happens with his new job.

Helpful and gentle suggestions to this problem are welcomed.
Give him the Jenna Marbles face.
It's explained in her YouTube video if you haven't seen it. I'd link it to here, but she uses language that would make a boilermaker blush. Which also happens to be the reason why she's so dang sexy.
I use the Jenna Marbles Go Away face all the time when he starts up.

It sounds like the only thing that person may understand is simply being told that he doesn't have the answer to everything and should give his input only when asked.
I lol'd.
Actually, the whole post was pretty funny.
The OP failed to mention that the housemate is an antagonist:
I'm dealing with a blabber mouth micro-managing unsolicited advice giver. Right or wrong this older house-mate comes out of nowhere posing as an overbearing saint (sermonizes at 4x the volume of a normal person) but never understands that the circular and unsolicited advice is reflecting poorly on him (consider that if I see flaws in him I choose to live and let live and mind my own business).
Telling him I've already heard the information only makes him defensive and then he makes a list of reasons why he is right and only trying to help. Thanking him only makes him think that he is superior and amazing. So I'm trying to avoid dishonest appreciation and flattery. This person is many times like gum in my hair; however, there are some good days.
Helpful and gentle suggestions to this problem are welcomed.
Man, this sounds exactly like the male version of a new female acquaintance of mine...I was literally up til 6am (twice this happened) stuck listening to her talking non-stop. It was a nightmare....
I can't offer any suggestions without offending the person, which is apparently what I've done, lol.
