Last time I went to Starbucks to kill some time before picking up my sister. I had a magazine, I grabbed a coffee and hoped to read it for my 20-25 minutes to kill. So I am obviously reading, and a woman, in her 60s comes up to me and asks if I am reading a catalog. I respond no, show her the cover of the magazine.
She proceeds to start talking about how she has no friends, her health history, her Swedish grandmother, the cute (black, she obviously had to mention his ethnicity. no clue why) teenager she saw working at a health fair, her art, her blood pressure, her baking, where she likes to shop, being gluten free. I whole bunch of random nonsense.
I kept checking the time, and giving off busy signals, but she didn't catch on. Then it was time to excuse myself.
I'll admit I am a chatty one, but my chats are used to fill the time and maybe last 5 minutes. Maybe. Unless there is a reason to lengthen them. Usually they are planned to end right when I am done with the line.
I haven't been back to that Starbucks.
But I usually get strangers who tell me about their divorces, their exes and their health. Still trying to find out why.
In line anywhere: if someone else is looking at the magazines, make a comment about one of the covers. "That looks really good on a cooking magazine" or "what a horrible/great outfit if it's a fashion or celebrity magazine?"

I have no problem with strangers, its friends and family I have the biggest problem with. I grew up along side an extroverted, gregarious, totally uninhibited, wise cracking sibling. I was always happy to play the role of side kick and wing man too. So I was always known as the quite one and never like to steal their light. Its funny because I feel some one I just met an hour ago might know me better than some one who has known me for a lot longer.
LOL. Louisville, Im not sure is even barely south.
Well, I can tell you them majority of the state dismisses the city as a part of Kentucky, lol!
