I have to disagree with the OP. I lived in the deep south for two and during that time was in a relationship, but the women that I saw with men they looked pretty evenly matched

I think it's mostly a factor of being raised around those type of guys, a mix of wanting someone like their dad and thinking that if they're too groomed or pretty or too good looking then it's not manly enough. Also, thinking that a really good looking guy wouldn't appreciate them as much as an average looking guy would.

oh yes, I totally got what you meant by average. In my book, a young man who is bald and sloppy looking is ugly, not average. But ya, the only man I ever loved was average looking and he appreciated me pretty well until it all went downhill. so I totally prefer average types that I can manage to find attractive, especially if they're country .

What I've also noticed down here...southern folks are proud to be southern and want someone of similar background.

Im not southern, but I tend to prefer the more average, 'ruggedly handsome' type and not the GQ, pretty boy type.

Ruggedly handsome I can understand.

But some of these gals down here, just date average guys that do not even reach handsome level really. Just think of an average guy, not ugly but not drop dead, tall, may have a receding hairline, nothing special.....yet is dating this absolutely drop dead gorgeous gal.

Last I went, half of the Texans I met didn't have Southern accents.
