My husband is a self-professed nerd, but most wouldn't really consider him one. Yes, he is/was (moved up into management) a software engineer but he isn't really "into" computers. He doesn't play games on them and really doesn't even want to look at one after work. He likes to watch sports but isn't really good at them. lol He isn't the prototypical cool guy but I don't really consider him a nerd either. He's good with people and can get in front of a room and be engaging. I totally support these types. Obviously! His friends are of a similar vein though some of his work friends cross over into TRUE nerd territory.
There are many categories of nerds. Some may appeal to some women and others have traits that turn off certain kinds of women (i.e. playing video games all day or other obsessions). Now, if the woman is turning down a guy solely because he lacks the "cool" appeal that impresses her girlfriends, then she's not worth the time anyway. I doubt the Steve Erkel type will ever have much luck with non-nerd women.
