In Southern California, and to some extent in Northern California, I didn't hear the word "dating" much. Most people said "so and so is 'going out' with so and so." I knew the word "dating" existed, but seldom heard it used. When I moved to other regions, namely the Southeast, I started hearing the word "dating" used more often.

To me, "dating," for me, provides a visual of proms and malt shop dates from the 40s where Norman Rockwell would depict a boy and girl sharing a malt with two straws. Do you use this word? Are there regional variations? I know that young black girls use "talking to" to mean "going out"/"dating."

Discuss.

Right, I think, in the Northeast, they say "so and so is 'seeing' so and so." Thanks.

I've heard it a few times on this forum and I thought it was quite odd. Could it have propagated from the online to the offline world...?

Being a foreigner, obviously I didn't grow up with the word "dating," but it always implied to me being with multiple people at the same time. That's why I never understood what exactly it entails... I'm a serial monogamist regardless of the duration and such was/is my world.

I hear "going out with" as synonymous for dating pretty commonly too.

Would you prefer "courting"?

I can kind of see what you mean. Sometimes if I were to hear "going out on a date", this is the cliche'd image that comes to mind.

That's even more old-fashioned.

What about 'going steady?' I always liked that one.

"Going out" was actually what we said in middle school. Which is funny, because we really weren't going anywhere.
