I've heard about parties where everyone brings a single friend or two so it ends up being like a "college mixer". Has anyone ever done that? Any tips? Anything to avoid?

My niece and her friends are recent college graduates so do not have the opportunity for meeting a lot of new people (both men and women) in classes, on campus, etc. In addition, many of their college friends have moved on to jobs in other cities or back home. I've suggested that they give a "singles party" but they have never even heard of that concept.

The type of party with good conversation, good food, good wine/beer and the potential for making a few new friends and perhaps meeting someone they may want to date sounds like it would be fun.

If you have hosted one or attended one would you suggest it just for singles or a regular party but just encourage the usual guests to each bring along one or two new people that they think would get along with the others. Would a theme night like "game night" or "touch football" or "capture the flag" or "wine tasting" be better than just a "party"?

Ideas?

Sounds like a good idea. Don't people do that anyway?

Among my niece and her friends if you are invited to a party you come and maybe bring a date you but don't just bring a random group of people with you. It isn't like "Hey, party on Elm street everyone is invited". Or like Open Houses. I'm not sure if parties in general are just smaller or maybe people don't give them as often. Or maybe, for safety reasons women are more careful who they invite into their apartment (not a friend of a friend of a friend who just heard about the party).

Maybe "singles parties" are more for people in the 30s, or in big cities like on Sex in the City.

My niece is pretty knowledgable and she and a friend or two that she asked had never even heard of the concept.

Guess who's done what. Each person can secretly write down something no one would suspect they have done (p.g. of course) or enjoy. Each person folds up their piece of paper and puts it in a basket. The host then reads each paper outload while the person who wrote it gets to stand up and acknowledge their fact.
