My answer to your question "is it possible to stay friends with an ex girlfriend" was going to be: "yes, UNTIL you get another one"...you obviously did.
It sounds to me like your wife was simply being jealous.
I think a lot really depends on the situation and what your relationship was like. I'm 24, single, never married and I like hooking up with random girls so I'm not sure if my thinking is wrong because I'm not married but hey, just giving what I think.
