I would like to start this new thread to gain some perspective from the ladies. I enjoy getting their point of view because I think it is the way to understand the opposite gender. I want to know the reason or reasons why women dress up real nice when they go out. I understand that different occasions and different venues require different wardrobes and that is what I'm looking for. I have heard that women dress up for other women because they seek approval from their fellow ladies or to compete with other women either for male attention or just to outshine other women, others say it is to get attention from men but without with competing with other women and so on. I'm not saying I believe any of these claims I just want to hear from others their thoughts on the subject. Whether it is at a nightclub,a bar or the beach, how do you choose what you wear.

^^ I mostly choose what I wear based on comfort in what I will be doing. For example if I'm going to the park with my kids, I will be sure to wear comfy shorts and a shirt that wont reveal or get in the way along with shoes for running, jumping, playing games, etc. If on a date; sure we want to be cute, and some women prefer sexy over comfort, very rarely do I take that sacrifice, I believe sexy/cute can come in comfort! Dressing up is also a boost for confidence as well, taking the time to get dressed, do hair, makeup and getting fit into something that fits well in all the right places makes me have more self confidence. When I dress up it surely isn't to compete with other women . It may be about looking good for the man I am with, but for the majority, it is for me! I enjoy being sexy and comfortable.

My first order of business is always to not embarrass myself. I would hate to go to what I think is a posh event only to find it's a backyard cookout and I am wildly overdressed. So that's concern #1.
If I'm going out with a guy and it's early in the relationship, then he is on my mind when I am dressing. I want to make the proper statement, whatever that might be. I think when it gets later in a relationship, I'm dressing to outshine other women, probably for a number of different reasons, including the guy I'm with. If there are a number of attractive women, I know I might not be the #1 belle, but I want to be in the running. I at least do not want to finish last.
There are many times, perhaps most of the time, when I'm going strictly casual. My goal is to be comfortable and simply be presentable.
Absolutely depends on my mood and where I'm going. Me and my friends had a 'formal dive bar tour' last summer where we were all dressed in tuxes (for the guys) and elegant evening gowns (for the ladies...and one of the guys, but that's a whole different story) and went to all the best sketchy dive bars in our county, drank super cheap beer and played pool. Super fun
I dress up here and there (usually nice dark rinse jeans and wedges/heels with a nice sweater) but usually I'm in shorts/jeans and flip flops with a tank top or shirt. I get leered at and stared at regardless of what I wear and it used to bother me, but now I just ignore it.
i know for my wife the way she dresses to go out is a reflection of her mood at the time. its just an extention of her feelings
