What do you do when the relationship between you and his mom is distant even when the 2 of you do get along. What sort of things do you talk about with his mom?

Whatever she wants to talk about with in reason. Let the mom sorta lead in that area especially if you don't know her all that well.

EVERYTHING. Pop culture, work stories, house keeping things, vacation plans...same sort of things I'd talk about with my mom, or any friend.

If there are grandchildren, talk about the children. For relationships that involve bf/gf, allow his mom to lead the conversation and smile a lot. Try to always look engaged and not bored. lol

We talk about my husband and his job, my job, her other children and grandchildren, vacations/trips she takes, whatever we're up to. All kinds of stuff. My MIL is an awesome woman. We're not super close, but it's a good relationship. Pretty much all of the relationships in my husband's family are good. They're easy going people for the most part.

I planted a garden for her, so she loves talking about how it's doing.

Whatever. Same stuff I talk about with my mom, sister, friends. She's a smart, interesting lady, not hard to talk to.

You know, I guarantee a good conversation starter would be to ask her about HERSELF or HER SON.

People eat that stuff up.
