Except for the advancement in science and medicine they can take this modern technology and shove it. I'm likely in the minority with this opinion but life was better without it.
I never did the phone dating but hearing ones voice has to be better than the endless back and forth games played online.
Words of wisdom, words of wisdom... I'm right there with you.
Don't online daters feel wierd knowing that their coworkers, neighbors and such could find their photo on the site? Of course, they wouldn't be able to admit to finding it, because then you could come back and say to them, "Well what are YOU doing on the dating site too?"

That happened to me, I noticed a female coworker and viewed her profile and then she goes to work and tell her girlfriend I had a online profile like she wasn't on there with me-lol

Uh, this isn't reality. I maybe speak to 1 in 10 people on the phone before I actually meet. What is the point? 2-4 emails and make plans to meet out for a pint. It's simple. Why are you messaging for a month or waiting for a phone number? Just do it.

I was born in 71 and also never heard of "telephone dating".
There was online dating in 2001. It was still somewhat new. I know I first tried out match.com in when I came home after graduating from college in early 2003.
Heck, people don't know this, but there was "computer" dating as far back as the early 70s believe it or not. My Dad did it. (This is way before my time obviously).
It was obviously nothing like OLD, instead you filled out a profile and gave it to a matchmaker service that has some large mainframe with punch cards, which they would apparently run some sort of algorithm and out would come some possible matches with contact info.

That sounds like more of a matchmaking service than computer dating

In high school some club did something like that to raise money. You filled out a bunch of questions then they ran it through a scan tron. They gave you like who your top match was but you had to pay to contact or something.

I was meeting girls on telephone chat lines as far back as 1989.
