The record producer yarn is just the same as making witty chit-chat and 'selling oneself' - just happens to make it slightly easier.
and of course, the chit-chat must still be performed , but it's ever so much harder when you tell her that your real job is KFC sales assistant.
so why not just use a little white lie from time to time?

he said he was Jewish, and eventually wooed the girl - but when she found out he was an arab she tried to have him arrested for rape

Depends on the laws in her country. In some countries, it's considered "2nd degree rape" if you get sex with a woman by lying. An Arab in a Jewish state? How do you think the jury's going to vote on that one?

Wedding crashers comes to mind. Lying to sleep with girls, probably not something I'd openly admit to doing. Now if a lie brought you and the love of your life together, it'd be hard to regret that.
This is one of the many reasons I have trust issues with men.

JetJockey, your getting mixed up between men, which are 'fairly' normal and ver'men (otherwise known by their Latin name of "rattus manus" which is what we seem to have here) that aren't.
The former can be trusted (with caution) whereas the later are best dealt with by hitting them with a large stick.
pathetic that you have to lie to get someone to have sex with you. not surprisingly, i guess none of you care about that though. so happy hunting.
