Some people are happy in their own company, other are not.
They like to share... like when you travel, or go to the movies... you want to have someone with you to talk about, or ponder.
They want to experience it together.
You might be happy being by yourself - and that's fine, but that's not a popular choice...
Some people do not feel the need to have a GF/BF, but I think most people would at least in one point in their lives want a companion, a wife or husband. Despite the fact that there is almost a 50% divorce rate, there is another 50% that stay together and are happy. And those that were divorced were happy and in love for whatever amount of years. Having a significant other can be wonder. Being bonded with one person that you can share you life with, someone that you know has your back, someone that lights up your life is a wonderful thing. There are people however that don't want that, and that is fine for them, they can lead their lives the way they want.

There are people who don't need to seem to follow the trend. If most of those RS's are phony I don't knock them.
