Earlier today, my partner phoned me and asked if I would be interested in an open relationship. I've never been in one before (nor do I particularly want to try it), and, after asking him if he was joking (he wasn't), said I'd think about it and hung up on him. To be frank, I need some advice, because I have no idea what I'm doing here. I really like him and we get along pretty well, so I don't want to break up with him. However, isn't an 'open relationship' just an excuse to sleep around? Is there any difference between this and consensual cheating? I know I should talk things out with him first, but I'm pretty awful when it comes to getting my feelings across (I usually end up throwing a tantrum). Also, I want to hear some other people's opinions, because it seems like, if he wants to have an open relationship, he's not that interested in me. Which would suck, because I really like him etc...

WHat an open relationship is is irrelevant. He asked you over the PHONE. He gave you no info. What his thoughts are. How to be safe with each other's feelings... He is a *******.

Default Classy...

Proposing this over the phone. This is a conversation where the person should at least respect one another to sit down and talk in person. I suggest have this open relationship-Without him. He is probably already involved with or planning to be involved with another wanting to have his cake and eat it too-Or just keeping you "on the side."

Can we have an open relationship = I want to sleep with other people.

Personally I'd be kicking this loser into touch.

Yes it is. If both partners want an open relationship, that's fine and dandy. But when partner has no interest, forget it!! Kick this a-hole outta your life.

I guess mutual consent would make it fair, But how do these really end? What happens when someone "involved" here gets pregnant? Hello Maury show!!

This is easy...

to thine ownself be true.

You don't want this in your life. Don't let him manipulate you into something you know you don't want.

I don't care how much I liked a guy I would never consent to being in an open relationship.
