This is crazy. You should be talking to her every day, or as often as you both have time.

You have to keep the lines of communication open. Maybe if she has a chance to talk to you about what is really bothering her, and you can empathise, then you two can work stuff out. If not, if you do break up, then you can support each other through the breakup.

There is no reason to lose your sweetie and one of your closest friends at the same time. Worse case, you can at least preserve the friendship. If you stop talking to her you lose both.

She's both playing with your emotions and keeping you around as her backup plan. This way she's officially free to sleep with others but in case they don't work out, she knows you the sucker will be calling her again around the holidays.

You should have asked the friend out since she seems so concerned over you --- but that's just another game being played by your ex, she's keeping tabs on you while she's sleeping around testing other waters.

The best thing for you is to move on, start dating others yourself.
