Well, some women have developed the white lie as a defense mechanism, because they directly rejected someone in the past and they blew up at them or got really violent (I've seen it happen a lot, usually guys who feel entitled.) Whereas if you say that you are married or something, it's a bit of a safer rejection.
Some women should carry pepper spray or a taser gun with them at all times, in case of a "issue".
I'm sure I would look and try to notice all the things about a women that attract me, pretty face, nice bust line, waist that is more slender than the hips, then I would shrug and move on. Maybe with a smile on my face, maybe with the thought on my mind that she has caused some other guy lots of grief, and that I'm glad I'm married...

Especially when you are away from your home town. As chances are you you never see her again.
I've usually been more "expansive" when on vacation or away from my home town.
That she very probably already has a boyfriend or even a husband and that she is completely outside of my reach.
Exactly why nice guys finish last with that thought.
