I think the terminology depends more on the circumstances than the sex of the partners. I left my ex because she was abusing me. We're both women.

If you ask for a divorce, approach the separation like an adult, and support your children as is your responsibility as a father, without bitterness or acrimony, you're a man who has left your wife.

If you take off and attempt to disappear into the woodwork with no intention of supporting your own children so that your future-former has to track you down and nail your balls to the wall in a courtroom, you're a skid who has abandoned your family.

This is especially true if she isn't doing anything to merit a divorce; IE infidelity.
I don't recall the OP mentioning any of this - way to bash without all the information...which none of us really have. Wow. Just wow.

Its not abandoning unless someone is completely dependent on their SO, and I dont mean just financially. If you're in good health and can support yourself I dont think I would consider it abandoning. Now, if you're a paraplegic and your SO walks out...I would consider that an abandoning situation.

I'd tend to agree with this. My sister and her ex weren't happy; he'd refused to go to counseling, etc. One day she came home from work and all his stuff was gone--he'd moved in with another woman. I'd probably consider it abandoning if she hadn't been able to support herself, but in their case he just left.
