I think if you want a decent reply, you need to send a first message that is conversational. A compliment is not conversational, because the obvious response is "thanks", then it puts the burden of conversation on her or you have to reply back to the "thanks" with something deeper. Realize that women get several times first responses than men get, so you have to keep the ball rolling.
At least ask a couple questions. If she mentions in her profile she likes running, ask her where she likes to run. If she like museums ask her if shes been to X museum.
