It's not really arbitrary to me, it's something I've never done. One night stands are a different issue altogether. I've just had a couple of experiences where I've had a second date with someone and the person was completely different from how they initially seemed and I realized they weren't someone I wanted to pursue. I just like to wait past the first date to make sure that they're someone I might want to continue dating. This applies only to people that I think have relationship potential. If I'm looking just to bang, I'll hit up a bar and use one of my eloquent pick up lines.
That makes sense, thanks.
ETA: I definitely consider one night stands and sex on a first date to be two completely different entities. I just don't feel that I should deny myself sex should I really want to have it.

So you want to avoid having sex with someone that you won't continue dating. But you're good with one night stands. We don't need no stinkin' logic!
When is it the right time to jump into bed after starting to date someone?
After a total of 12 hours and 34 minutes of dating.
It has nothing to do with the number of dates.
Any other answer is factually incorrect.
