I'm lacking cultural references here. It does look that dating and "having sex" are interchangeable. Does the word "dating" preserve any unique meaning to it, or it's becoming redundant to sex?

Having sex is having sex. Dating is going out, on dates.

And then having sex.

I interpreted "dating" as meaning being committed to one person sans wedding vows and generally meant you were getting laid.

sex=sex, dinner + sex = dating. Anyhow, the word "dating" automatically implies sex as "going out" progresses. Thus, dating = sex. What is the word for "going out" without sex?

Dating means your relationships includes outings, presumably fun, where you are in public (and by extension, not in the middle of having sex.) together.

I guess it does depend on where you come from and your values?

When I was used to dating Asian guys, it was usually just dates, and no expectations for sex. Pure fun and enjoyment, and mutual respect for one's company.

Then when I started dating people of various ethnicities, mostly Americanized guys from different backgrounds, dating was almost pejorative and used interchangeably with sex. I'm still unsure, but it seems like more of a loose term..

Depends. Dating to me is going out and having fun, not necessarily sex involved (or expected). In some cases, moving too slow is not considered dating and becomes mostly hanging out.

Kinda vague at times.

"Going out" - sex = "friendzone"

Going out.
Growing up, dating did not necessarily mean you were having sex. You could be dating someone and not having sex or you could be dating someone and hooking up, or you could be just hooking up and not dating.

Dating just meant that you were actually going on dates or 'going out'.
