This seems to be a trend among collegiate hipsters for whom bisexuality is no longer shocking enough for the general populace.
It's not about being hip or shocking, it's about no longer finding the socially constructed false gender binary or orientation binary to be relevant. It's basically society catching up to what social scientists and sex researchers have known for decades. I can tell by the posts here that many corners of society are still pretty far behind.

It's not "enlightened" so much as having a basic educational foundation, and I'm not proud of myself, but appalled at some of the ignorance that is apparently still out there in the year 2013. I guess I didn't realize it was this bad. WTF, people?

Sorry, you can quote all the earnest undergrad gender studies theses you want, but the idea that there is some kind of third gender is just hogswallop.
