Having worked in Long-Term Care Facilities for a number of years, dealing with Marine/Army Veterans, supposedly tough as nails, looking like the epitomes of masculinity, it's an amusing show to watch sometimes when they're dealt a major health setback.

There they go bragging about their macho military adventures and then?

"Nurse! Nurse! I'm in so much pain! Where's my pain medication? I can't go one more minute without it!"

And if they were back in the military arena, what would their commanding officers say to this whining?

"For Chissakes! That's just a small bullet/knife wound! Man up!!!"

With most people I'm hard shell/soft center. If I completely trust someone and am 100% comfortable with that person than that person alone will likely see me as soft shell/soft center. That's a rare occurrence though.

That is not fair at all. They are in pain and are suffering. They're not on the battle field anymore anyway. They deserve compassion.

And the soft shell, hard center types I've encountered, oftentimes, you'll hear: No thanks! I'd rather suffer than succomb to getting addicted to pain medication! I'll weather this storm myself!

Stoical, proud, egotistically they'll say: "See! I made it thru all this pain without medication!"

Genuine hard-shell/soft-center probably isn't as common as the soft-shell/hard-center.

but don't believe anything I say, what do I know?

I'm a soft shell, ridiculously fluffy and luxuriantly soft centre.

Neither.
I don't like crybabies.
And I don't like people who put up a front of any kind.
