Could you imagine what it would be like to propose and watch her break into tears as she said no?

I can't imagine why someone would propose to another person without there having been some pragmatic, open discussion of the future of the relationship and the possibility of marriage. Springing a formal proposal on someone out of the blue just seems so...overdramatic and desperate.

^^^ THIS!!!
When you propose, you should have a good idea what answer to expect, or are you just kidding yourself about her feelings for you???

Yes, I always thought it was tacky that some guy would pop the question on some jumbotron at a major sporting event. Nothing like putting the girl on the spot in front of 80,000 people.

You'd think.

I'm pretty vocal about having no desire to marry, but I've had proposals. Some people just do what they want to do.

I've only "seen it" once ... in THIS timepiece movie about a whirlwind tour through Europe. He was the tour guide. She was a buyer from Minneapolis who was on the tour. I think this was the only night they spent together, at the very end of the tour. RIP Suzanne Pleshette.
