As for African cultures- you are correct: in Tanzania is it a woman's ankles that turn men on/are covered in a spirit of modesty, but I would argue that this is a result of poverty (i.e. without the luxuries of enfamil, bottles; needs trump pleasures.. ill refrain out of lazines from expounding..) and primitive thought. In general, that cultural nuance'd be an exception.
Which rather begs the question from whence do you conclude such a generalization? Oh, you went to Italy just once? Where else have you traveled and how long did you stay in that country other than on a guided tour. And "oggling is not a word. I think you mean ogling?
BTW, St. Thomas is about as mainstream as they come.... Plenty of fast food and "guided tours" there. A Caribbean Disneyland with a few good dive spots. It reminds me of many other predictable, commercial islands (e.g. Aruba) where I'd prefer to be underwater for most of my trip. I prefer less developed islands in the West Indies....
But have you even tried any of the islands off the beaten path? Or is this just the first island you stumbled upon on your Carnival Cruise two hour touristy port of call to buy rum, a mini steel drum, and shell necklace for your girl - and then back on the boat to get in line for the all-you-can-eat buffet and cheesy nightclub tickets, but not without first thinking - Hey I should buy a condo here - they speak English and have a McDonalds....
See.... now how does that "generalization" feel to you?
