I have one guy friend who is gay, I have a few that I would consider aquaintances more than friends - be lucky to see them once a year. I don't have any guy friends that I would consider close friends on par with my girlfriends, that I talk to and see regularly. Does my SO count as a friend?

Yes.
I edited the OP to say singles.
I just realized that due to not dating right now, I go long stretches (months) without even talking to any males outside of the ones who are doing their job at work. Seems kind of weird.
I don't really have any female friends other than my girlfriend. I did have some female friends in college but most of them are elsewhere or no longer friends. I don't think it's that strange. Nowadays I only keep in consistent contact with really good friends and all of them are men.
