It had me thinking today because a patient of mine kept telling me how beautiful I am and how I must get hit on a lot. But I was thinking to myself, I rarely get hit on, but I do get a lot of stares. Is it because I come off as very unapproachable?
I've known a lot of "beautiful women" who haven't gotten hit on, and some of the guys who were friends of friends just thought they were already with someone. You know, the whole "she's got to be somebody's baby" thing. Didn't help that a friend was wearing a ring on her ring finger either, though more of a fashion statement than anything. Some women (like myself) just do not want that attention, but if a woman wants some of that sort of attention, playful flirting from afar will tell men that they are available and more approachable. I've heard that being turned down by beautiful women hurts a lot more than by, um, less beautiful women.
Most of the beautiful women I've known would be hit on regularly, though maybe not as much as I would have expected. I figure most guys just assume they're not available. And those guys would be correct 99.9% of the time. I do know an overweight woman who isn't hideous but certainly not pretty, who has two children by two different fathers, and wears filthy pajama pants in public, and she's usually hit on or asked out several times a week. Granted, she does have a pretty awesome personality, but she's often hit on by men who are only just meeting her, and don't have a clue about her personality.
