Say you're driving with your gf on the highway, you narrowly avoid an accident, her mood changes to cold and distant. You try to talk to her and she remains cold and distant, refusing to even look at you. You have 20 mins left on your trip to drop her off so just sitting there, saying nothing is bad and makes it seem like her behavior is justified. What do you do to change the situation around? (Remember, the situation that caused her mood swing is irrelevant. If it isn't narrowly avoiding an accident, it's some other random thing. The key here is how to react to over-reactions.)
In hopeless situations like this, I would recommend simply saying anything that comes to heart. Say it and get it over with. Damned if you do, damned if you don't, you know? Nothing to lose.
unless you are the type who wants to calm people down all the time (which if you are you should already be great at this), its best to find yourself a more emotionally adjusted partner.
What exactly are you looking for in a good response to a situation like this?
That's what I do now. I just say stuff like, "Your mood changed. That's an odd reaction. What's wrong?" To which I get no response. She's typically fine later though. Sometimes even apologizes for over-reacting. I'm looking for something that might reverse her mood faster. The only person who will know how to do that is someone that has successfully dealt with this stuff before.
