It takes time to really know you love that person or not. When you "lust", you want to take that person, you want to own her/him. When you love them, you take time to know them, want to make them happy, and care what happen to them. You think about their needs before your own. Sometimes these two feelings can go together, and you need to give yourself and that person time to figure what your feelings are. It depend on what your goal is, but if you want a long-term relationship, perhaps wait awhile till you guys get physical.
You give yourself plenty of time to get to know them first. Love develops more gradually than lust. Lust can obscure a person's faults, so you don't notice them until it's too late and you're already overly involved, emotionally and physically.
"how do I know if it's love", the answer to that is extremely complex... There's a reason 90% of songs are about love or the lack thereof... There are lots of people who are in love, but how exactly to describe it? I can tell you one thing about my gf I know if the **** hits the fan, there is no one in the world I would rather be around to have my back than her. I know that when push comes to shove, it's me and her against the world if needs be. I guess that's how I know I love her, is that I would put her needs over my own.
