Never been to a company event because the companies I've worked for expected a date to come with, so I just avoided going to them, with the exception of the few times I had a GF, but even then I didn't attend a few because she said she was busy working those evenings.

If you feel confident in finding a date in the next few months, then there's no reason you shouldn't do this and say +1 give you the name later.

If you're me though, and you absolutely wanted to bring someone, the only real option is the escort since I can't get dates even if it was my last day on Earth.

I don't see the big deal. I always go to Christmas parties alone for work even though everyone has a so. If there's free alcohol count me in. The "awkwardness" will only last until my second or third drink.

Some people don't want to feel awkward, nor do they want to drink so much, so they avoid the awkwardness all together.
