With Japan's population decreasing and the overall population getting older I do not think it is beneficial for the economy and the future of Japan. I do agree with your stance about religion having a decreased role in society but having a low birthrate and a larger older population is going to cause problems.

I don't know that they've stopped having sex, more just relationships which, I agree, can be a mighty hassle and burden. The Japanese culture can be quite isolating (same with America or Europe) too so it's no surprise loneliness, suicidal and mental illness is common in these countries.

Here's a 15 minute video on the bizarre 'Love Industry' of Japan, booming because apparently they just aren't interesting in 'real' relationships, and prefer to use artificial means to fulfill their needs. It's quite interesting. Their population is declining rapidly, and their young people just don't seem interested in real relationships.

NOTE: NSFW

That's a very strange World over there. I don't have first hand experience of it, but I've met enough people to tell me some of the truly strange and odd events and other happenings that they partake in.
Tentacle porn. One of the unforeseen side-effects of the bomb.
