I just found out a coworker of mine is married but estranged from her husband for 20yrs. The whole time I thought she was divorced cause she never talks about him but her kids still have a relationship with him.
My question is Why would someone stay married to their spouse for that long?

My parents did, until one of them wanted to marry their new partner.I never asked why, but I suppose it was laziness in their case, as my sibs and I were grown.
Maybe with their kids it is helpful for the health insurance or something?
There's no need, really, if the separation is not acrimonious.
I have a friend who was married for 13 years, the last 10 of which she lived in hiding in another state. She said if she asked for a divorce, she is sure he would have killed her. Fortunately for her, he ended up dying from some blood disease and she was free and safe.
I'm sure I cannot understand unless I've been in those shoes. She's the second old friend that I recently found out had been badly abused and fearing for her life. I'm glad all I said was, "I'm so sorry that happened to you," instead of, "How on earth did you get to that place?"
I know a guy who is that exact situation for 15ish years.
I've asked. Responses include:
1. Don't have an address for her.
2. Why bother... costs money
3. Keeps me from getting married again (his 3rd)
And probably 1-2 I'm missing.
