Hey there Ruth. I have to disagree about the condom bit. Young humans raging on hormones are reckless and certainly don't take the time to educate themselves about how to properly use a condom.
Key word: "young" humans. Teens and 20-somethings aren't among those with the option to have their bc by surgical means. I assumed the OP had in mind 30-somethings & 40-somethings. They're old enough to be careful with condoms. And these days there are safe IUD's. For some women, those options are preferable to oral bc that messes with one's hormones.

Condoms break Ruth Dear. Even 30 or 40 year old men can be quite adolescent when it comes to the heat of the moment.
I would not have sex with a person infected with any type of sexual disease even if they had perfect condom execution. No thanks the risk is not worth it.
People are insane in the membrane to have sex with strangers thinking that a condom will protect them. So much can go wrong with using a condom...plus condoms don't feel that great.
But I am in no way encouraging people to have unprotected sex...just make sure you know who you are sleeping with and be sure to use the condom properly.
I also can't imagine having an IUD. I would think those would be out of date by now or is it just me

haha, for sure! That's why the other 1/2 of the couple is important in monitoring bc as well. IME usually condoms break if there isn't enough lubrication (assuming it was checked for flaws before use). Women can usually tell if things are a little too dry to continue the activity. Not sure what STD's have to do with it. You can still get STD's after surgical sterilization, and even with condom use. OP was asking why those who want to be child-free haven't been surgically sterilized.

Sorry for the deviation. Of course you can get STD after surgical sterilization.
I only mentioned STD's and condoms because I can't believe that people would take such a huge chance with a stranger and a condom. To me it is like playing Russian Roulette!
I am thankful that I fell in love with a man who had a vasectomy! I never wanted to have children and I really did not like taking birth control. So it was a perfect match from that perspective!
Other than total abstinence, no method of birth control is 100 percent effective. In rare cases, it is possible for sperm to find its way across the void between the two blocked ends of the vas deferens. Called recanalization, it generally occurs within the first few months following vasectomy. However, the failure rate of vasectomy is very low. It has been used for many years as a means of sterilization and has a long track record as a safe and effective method of contraception.
If dead or live sperm continue to appear in the semen samples, or if sperm are discovered after a period of sterility, a repeat vasectomy will be necessary. Fortunately, the medical literature shows that this only happens approximately once in every 1,000 cases, a failure rate far less than for any other form of birth control.
A lot cheaper than raising kids! For real, those of you saying you can't afford it - call Planned Parenthood. They may be able to help you out, male or female.
Also, those of you saying vasectomy/tubal are not 100% - it's as close to 100% as you're going to get without being celibate. I had my tubal 13 years ago and have never had a "scare" since. Vasectomy failure is very, very, very low (and to tell the truth I've read a few articles where doctors have admitted that several vasectomy "failures" were the result of an affair, not actual failure. The more you know...).
I don't see the need since being celibate works instead.
