It's not about a determined time period a man "must stick around." It's about people being on the same page. The problems arise when one person thinks it's the beginning of a relationship and the other person thinks it's a fling. Luckily, I've never had this problem!
So? Even if they both are on the same page for a long term relationship, is the man under any obligation not to leave the relationship at anytime he deem it in his best interest?
Some women expect you to stick around for a lifetime. Some expect you to just spend the night and maybe stay for breakfast if it's a weekend. Some just want you to stay and cuddle for a little while. If both are agreed it's a ONS, then she probably doesn't care if you stick around.
Is a man free to leave after having sex with a girl despite any expectations or words given before having sex?

I'm not sure what you are trying to say. People aren't "under any obligation" to stay - but if both people think they are getting into a relationship and one of them disappears after they have sex - it's not going to go over very well. This isn't rocket science.

It sounds like you do not understand what a relationship is. Nor what love is.
If you are in a relationship with someone, you love them (or else you have bigger issues. And if you love someone, breaking up with them feels like cutting off part of yourself. You do not do it unless you have tried every other possible solution for the problems you are facing.
None of this is about what you 'have to' do. It is about what a healthy man wants to do.

Why do you even need to ask this? I think you know the answer.
