I've cried (not inconsolably) at a family members funeral and I've even "gotten something in my eye" during an emotional movie or two. I don't think anyone finds crying "cute" unless they have something wrong with them, but most women will not want a man that cries every time he has a mood swing. Some will be just fine with that though.

I don't think he's being cute when he's fake crying.

Usually, when a guy genuinely cries, you can tell.

But, when people cry as a form of manipulation, I can tell.

Annoying.

It depends on what he's crying about. If his mom just died, yes, it's fine if he cries. I had a bf in high school though who, after losing his football game, sat on the grass and cried. Not cool, not cute.
