Either type can oral or genital. (Or elsewhere, for that matter, but oral and genital are the most common places for sores, in that order.) It used to be true that one was nearly always oral and the other was nearly always genital, but that has changed in recent decades, most likely due to an increase in oral sex.
Well since 90% of adults have HSV-1 it will be kinda hard to avoid unless it's two virgins going at it. Guess people will just have to take precautions.
That's kind of the whole point people are making here. Same goes for HPV. If you're sexually active, it's more likely than not that you have or will have both HPV and Herpes, with or without symptoms.
HS1 isn't really as much to worry about as long as you're not kissing her or doing anything else with her mouth while she has a cold sore. HPV, yeah that's a little more risky, so in all honesty it's up to you but it was neat that she was honest with you. So many people are not.
I know some of you guys were asking for more info about her. She said that she has oral HSV-1 and high-risk HPV (meaning that she is at risk for cervical cancer). Does that change things at all?
Nope, that's all pretty standard. Don't kiss or receive oral while she has an active outbreak on her mouth, and use a condom. You still may catch one or both, but you may already have one or both anyway, and if you don't you most likely will sometime, whether you get it from her or someone else.

Maybe this is the Universe's way to tell you to get the HPV vaccine.
If you're already sexually active, it's generally considered too late for the vaccine, because it's likely you already have it. To be effective it really needs to be given to everyone around age 12.

The vaccine doesn't cover all the types of HPV, or even half of the strains. Still, better than nothing, I guess. Though it's too late for the OP. I thought they were only giving it to women, anyway, because of the cervical cancer risk? Maybe now that they know men can get throat cancer from it, they're advocating it for boys, too?

It's more universally recommended for women, but many doctors recommend it for men, as well. (Besides mouth/throat/head cancer, it also causes penile and anal cancers in men, as I pointed out earlier in this thread.)
