Yeah, I'm also pretty sure a lot of the threads here are full of outliers. People do a lot more complaining than they do bragging. It's much more acceptable to people to start a thread saying "I graduated and can't find a job" than it is for people to say, "I graduated and made 60k in my first job"
Most of my friends that graduated with 4 year degrees seemed to make 40-60k their first year out.
A lot of it also depends on the person. Those that graduated college with years of working experience (even unrelated) will do far better than someone who graduated without ever holding any kind of job in their life.
If someone gets summer internships, and holds some kind of part time job throughout the school year, that will help a lot. Most expect to never work a day in their life then get some decent 50k/year job thinking someone will take a "chance" with them, even though they've hardly ever worked a day in their life.
There are a lot of people graduating collge and not being able to find jobs. It's rough out there. I'm in a tech type business and those are always pretty much in demand, same goes with a few other fields, but yeah, people should be thankful if they get 40 to 60k right out of school.
I know my company starts guys out at about 55 or so... But 55 here in So Cal isn't the same as in the midwest somewhere... LOL....
My dear sister has once told me, "Well, I expect my future man to make six figure income, to have washboard stomach, to look behave and act like my dead boyfriend Jason T (a Marine), and he must love me like I am some sort of princess." HAHA
There are differences between fantasy world and reality world, folks.

If you check out the various threads discussing unemployment, you will see that expecting 40-50k "fresh out of college" is quite unrealistic, except in certain specialized markets.
What houstan-dan said is true. People usually do not go to a discussion forum to brag about making x amount of money. I think 40-50k is realistic for a lot of majors if you work hard enough for it.

Well, we probably need to be talking about specific locations and taking consideration of the cost of living. There are waitstaff in NYC making 40-50K.
But the "fresh out of college" graduates making more than household median income for their areas are definitely not the peak of the bell curve.

That is not a lot of money at all but starting out it might be OK. To live on its just not enough to even live in most places IMO.
