I walk on curb side. From my understanding it goes back to early cities in Europe where the bed pots where thrown out windows to the streets.

Correct. Not just chamber pots, but garbage, as well. The person walking closer to the building side had less chance of getting sullied.
It a quaint old custom.

A gentleman walks to a woman's left and offers his right arm, as his sword hangs on his left hip. It just so happens that when walking down the street on the correct sidewalk (with traffic) he is nearer to the street.

We joke about this too, though he's the one with the hefty life insurance policy.

I tend to walk with my husband so that he's on my right side. When we sit I prefer him on my right as well and in our bed, he's on my right. However, while walking around in Charleston this weekend, he was on the street side and then walked in front when the sidewalk got narrow. I NEVER walk in front. I'd rather follow than lead.

Sixy you just made me think about what side of the bed I sleep on! Always the right hand side too!

I don't know why but now I am intrigued!

I don't like it when guys walk in front of me, and I agree with the curb thing too.

Come to think about it, my bio dad never did this. My step dad does.

But in all seriousness, I live in NYC so I'm not sure how prevalent these "rules" are. Frankly, since Asian parents to teach you about dating, I wasn't taught these "chivalric" rules.

1. How about we just AVOID the puddle in the first place and make both parties happy.

2. Where do you people live where getting splashed by an oncoming car is a concern? I live and work in the Chicago Loop and have never seen this. If you keep to the sidewalk and not the middle of the street, you're gonna be OK.

You've never gotten splashed by a car? I have many times.

I lived in Chicago, I live in Boston now, have lived in other cities... yes, I get splashed. It isn't infrequent. Happens a lot with buses coming fast into the curb.
